Long Winter Days

It's been a cold week. And yet, as much as I wish we could just go for a walk, I'm really trying to savor these days where I can hang out with Lizah around the house and work on random projects. When it comes right down to it, I like being home and I'm really thankful to have a warm home. This past weekend we went to Chicago for dinner one evening and as we were getting into the city there was a tent camp set up near some bridges. My heart sank as I thought of the people who would be spending a freezing night in icy snow with nothing but a tent over their heads. Maybe that sight is what has helped me maintain my sanity during these long winter days.

Last week Seth had a class/conference in Springfield followed by dinner with a friend so Lizah and I made a trip to Indiana for the day. It worked perfect that Jim and Maria were stopping through to pick up the big white van for a road trip to Florida. Going home just to be there, just to hang out and do normal life, feels so good. It was well worth the drive.

The meal I was referring to above was at The Girl & The Goat in downtown. This was the kids' gift to Dad and Mom Waibel for their 30th Anniversary. Although we drove through snow there and back, the food was some of the best I've ever eaten with flavor combinations I'd never think to put together. They serve each dish family style and we ordered in such a way that most dishes were divided into 9 portions which meant we got just a few bites of each thing. Some dishes, like the goat belly and goat ricotta blintzes were not meant to be divided into so many portions so we just took nibbles, but it was fun to try a good variety of options from the menu. While the prices may look unreasonable at first glance, the experience is much more than just eating. We sat at a table right in front of the kitchen which was "open" and I could watch them do their thing...roast meat in the brick oven, slice squash, flour the naan, etc. For a special occasion I would highly recommend this to anybody whose love language is food. After the meal we attempted to drive even closer to Michigan Avenue to visit Ghirardelli for dessert (like we really had room, ha) but let's just say that didn't work out the best. A stop at Oberweis on the way home for ice cream topped it off just fine.

Kimberly and Edie had come to watch Lizah for the evening and I was actually able to enjoy myself without worrying too much about her. I'll admit I sent a few texts to check up on them but I never asked for a picture! Edie took some great pictures that I'll share here:

Lizah has been sick with congestion and a cough but somehow she smiles through it all and brings us so much joy. Last week she giggled for the first time and this week she really started letting it out. We still have to work hard for the giggles but the efforts are well rewarded.

That's all for now. Happy February!
