Winter Wonderland

We didn’t get the two feet of snow that were mentioned for today; however, this morning I woke up and peaked outside to see that there was at least a new layer of sparkly snow. As I drove into work, the intricacy of the snow on each tree branch filled me with wonder. Even though we’ve seen more snow this year than the usual winter, the beauty of a frosty morning has a way of filling me with renewed awe at God’s attention to detail. It’s astounding.
It wasn’t a busy morning at work but I got to make a few more drinks for customers and then practice steaming milk. Before heading home I poured myself a miele (honey and cinnamon steamed into the milk which is poured into espresso–highly recommend it!) and without even turning off the car in the driveway I changed into snow pants, grabbed my camera bag, and headed to Lake of the Woods.
This is when I’m reminded of how little I know about photography. Lighting, exposure, white balance, metering, even photo composition. When there’s something as photo-worthy as a fresh snow I realize that I should’ve been reading tips for capturing the beauty. But no matter how expert, there really is no way to capture the depth of a winter wonderland, is there? As I got out of my car and made tracks in the snow it was overwhelming to point my little camera at the acres of fluff covered branches and twigs and try to do it justice.
I know I can’t. And so these photos are more for a reminder in the summer days that there is beauty in every season. They have been edited because my photography skills are not adequate for posting raw pictures.
Traipsing around in the snow before lunch got me to thinking that it would be a good day for a hot lunch of sorts so I decided to make crepes. There were some huge blueberries on sale at Aldi this week and I picked up two packages because Seth (and I) love them! Blueberry sauce seemed like a good idea for a cold wintery day so I threw some berries in a pan with a few tablespoons of water and a spoonful of sugar. I took pictures the whole time because my camera was out and they were too pretty not to. Then I went so far as to take pictures during lunch because we’re at that point in our relationship where he loves me enough to say I’m not weird for doing it and I’m comfortable enough to not care. Tee-hee. I never would’ve done this nine months ago!
And to balance out that sweetness we had a few fried eggs and some bacon of course.

I’m really ready to have a garden again but I’ll admit that it’s been a pretty spectacular winter day.
