Birthdays in Michigan

Right now, drinking lukewarm coffee is kind of appropriate for how I’m feeling about last weekend. It was so amazing in the moment, but now I’m going through the withdrawal of realizing that it began a week ago. We had a weekend full of family, boating, celebrating, and kissing chubby cheeks. Seriously, my niece is so squishy.
Seth and I got up to Jim and Maria’s Friday night and the rest of my family rolled in super late. That didn’t stop David from being willing to take us out on the lake at 7 in the morning so a group of us headed to Murray Lake, only a few miles from McCormick’s. The water was so smooth and the air so crisp that it was well worth the early morning (gotta love time zones). Seth and I double skied which was a blast and a first for me. I also really enjoyed watching my brothers wake-board since I missed my family’s boating vacation this year. It was kinda crazy to look back at my fourteen-going-on-thirty-year-old brother out there in the wake, not a boy anymore but a strapping young man.

After a few hours on the water we went back to the house for breakfast. Although it was Maria’s birthday, she stayed back to work in the kitchen and serve us blueberry french toast and quiche. It hit the spot and fueled us up for the rest of the day at Pine Island Lake. Since the whole family can’t fit in David’s boat we had a few that stayed behind. But a large group of us were together and it was amazing.
That evening we were all back together for dinner and games. And a trip to Ball’s for ice cream.

On Sunday it was wonderful to all be together for church, to sing Grammy’s church song on the way, and to hold Addie through second service. After church we got ready for the party making Calvin’s favorite foods: wings and pizza. Ha, what a kid. Jim’s side of the family also came so the house was full and such a happy crowd it was. Maria made some killer pb chocolate cupcakes and even sent four home with us!
What a wonderful trip. Worth the drive, the bruises, and sore arms. As our family grows and times that we are all together seem more rare, it’s so good to be reunited and realize that nothing can replace quality time together.
